Mehndi planning guide
The Mehndi is the most colourful night of the shaadi — and the one most likely to run two hours late. Here is how to keep it fun and on time.
Who hosts and who comes
Traditionally each family can hold its own Mehndi, or both come together. Mehndi guest lists are usually smaller than Baraat and Walima, so plan catering at roughly half to two-thirds of your biggest function.
A simple evening timeline
- Guests arrive and welcome drinks
- Bride's entry under the phoolon ki chadar
- Mehndi or ubtan rasam with elders
- Dance performances
- Dinner
- Dhol and wrap-up
What to book
- Stage and floor décor in yellows, greens and oranges
- Dhol wala and a sound system
- Mehndi artist for the bride and guests
- Caterer, or home food plus a live station
Frequently asked questions
How long does a Mehndi last?
Four to five hours is typical. A written run-sheet with a person responsible for each part keeps it on track.
